Teldon's ABDC Rewatch - Season 3, Episode 3 - The Britney Challenge

This is Teldon's Review of America's Best Dance Crew Season 3' Britney Challenge. Thanks, Teldon!
---------------------------------------------------
SAFE CREWS:

Beat Freaks dancing to "Womanizer" by Britney Spears
Challenge: Perform the masculine and feminine sides of Britney from the video
Was it clean? For the most part.  While there was no mistakes you could tell they were uncomfortable dancing sexy.  It just didn't have that spark they normally have. 9 pts
Was it well thought out? For the most part.  Again you could tell they were uncomfortable in the second part of the routine and that took away. In addition, the whole thing felt like go from point a to b.  They need to go to point c.  8pts
How well did they do the challenge? Yes it was, it was well framed in it's narrative and they did a great job getting the point of the song across. Could have been a bit stronger. 6 pts
What were the highlights? The gender change is what I would say the highlight was.
What, if anything, took away from the performance? Do I need to say it again?  The feminine part was kinda weak and took away from the whole.
Total points- 23 pts

Strikers All-Stars Dancing to "Gimme More" by Britney Spears
Challenge: Perform while creating mirror images of themselves
Was it clean? It was not up to their usual standards of togetherness.  I know they were trying some new moves and I appreciate the versatility but it did not come off as clean as they had been in past weeks.  Most noticeable was when the "mirror" was facing the audience is when slight timing errors really showed.  The other part would be the jump through the mirror they landed well but one gentleman was out of formation just a bit. 8 pts
Was it well thought out? As much they were off in certain parts they really did a great job putting this routine together.  It really showed creativity when they danced outside their comfort zone and how well they did their mirror moves. 9 pts
How well did they do the challenge?  Normally with a routine like this I would say they did their challenge too long but they managed to almost seamlessly blend in their dance moves to the challenge.  They made it look easy. 10 pts
What were the highlights? The side switch with the mirror is easily the most memorable part of their routine.
What, if anything, took away from the performance?  Nothing really took away from the routine.
Total points- 27 pts

Dynamic Edition dancing to "Stronger" by Britney Spears
Challenge: Perform while incorporating chair choreography
Was it clean? For the most part.  The chair section just felt off and tacked on in the beginning but once they drop the chairs their normal dancing was tight and clean as usuall. 8 pts
Was it well thought out? Hard to say.  The whole package this week just felt really off to me.  While the chair section was well done it felt off to me. 7 pts
How well did they do the challenge?  They did the challenge creatively.  However, there was too little dance with that part and that took away form the whole package. 5 pts
What were the highlights? Brandon's jump off the chair and then going right into the choreo without missing a beat.
What, if anything, took away from the performance? The costumes took away as did the lack of dance in the beginning.
Total points- 20 pts

Quest Crew dancing to "Toxic" by Britney Spears
Challenge: Perform a portion of their routine blindfolded
Was it clean? Not really, I expected the blindfolded part to be sloppy but I did not expect the first half of the routine to be boring. The second half of the routine was much cleaner than the opening part was.  Overall, it was OK with a few formation errors. (I did not take off for the blindfolded section) 8 pts
Was it well thought out? To a degree.  The beginning and end were well done and made sense.  The middle just felt out of place and a tad amateurish. 8 pts
How well did they do the challenge?  This is really hard to judge because of the difficulty of the challenge.  I want to take off because it was not that exciting but I have to take safety into account for this.  Overall, it was OK but could have been a lot better.  8 pts
What were the highlights? The blindfolded flip was the only thing that saved the challenge section.  Also Hok pulling out his inner Britney helped increase the enjoyment of the last section.
 Total points- 24 pts

Fly Khicks Dancing to "...Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears
Challenge: Perform with sharp pirouettes in their routine
Was it clean?  Yes it was.  They seemed like a different crew this week.  They were together and on point throughout most of the set.  The only things I saw that were a bit off were the formations toward the end. 8 pts
Was it well thought out?  Very much so.  The opening brought a strong statement to the stage and they built on that energy throughout the rest of the routine.  The transitions toward the end were well thought out and framed the crew as a whole. 9 pts
How well did they do the challenge?  They handled it like pros and made it look easy and natural.  They brought the sexy without being slutty. 9 pts
What were the highlights? The opening and the ending were the highlights of this routine.  They started on a powerful statement and ended on a strong statement.
What, if anything, took away from the performance? Nothing took away their best performance yet.
Total points- 26 pts

THE BOTTOM TWO

Did America get it right?  I like to think so Team Millennia has been less than impressive this season and Ringmasters finally got in the bottom.

Team Millennia dancing to "Me Against The Music" by Britney Spears and Madonna
Challenge: Perform with a hat and cane as props.
Was it clean? For the most part.  The begining and ending were sharp and on point.  The cane section had numerous sync errors in it and it seemed like someone was off the entire time they were using the canes. 7 pts
Was it well thought out? Yes they channeled both Britney and Madonna quite well.  With dicotomous performances by both the ladies that formed a good whole. 8 pts
How well did they do the challenge? The hat section was well done and came off as smart and easy.  The cane section was sloppy and came off poorly. 6 pts
What were the highlights? The opening section with the hats and the Britney and Madonna sections.
What, if anything, took away from the performance? The cane section.
Total points- 21 pts

Ringmasters dancing to "Circus" by Britney Spears
Challenge: Perform an illusion making it appear as if they were giants.
Was it clean? For them yes, hell for anyone yes.  They showed they could finally dance and dance well.  While the difficulty was not there what they did together was well done. 7 pts
Was it well thought out? Again yes.  They had a theme and played it to the hilt.  They thought out every section and made it enjoyable.  Nothing flet forced or out of place for once.  8 pts
How well did they do the challenge? They took a fairly tough challenge and made it fun.  They cleverly got it done and out the way early on.  7 pts
What were the highlights? The bonebreaking style was the highlight for once.  They finally blended it into their routine and not make it feel like an out of place side show act.
What, if anything, took away from the performance? nothing really took away.
Total points- 22 pts

Did the judges get it right? Honestly, yes.  While Ringmasters did have a weaker overall seasonal performance they came into their own this night.  Team Millennia is a good crew but they stayed at a fairly weak level for these three weeks.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Thoughts on the eliminated crew-  I am glad they got a second chance but they blew it with the themes the first two weeks.  At times it felt like they were more into their personas then into their dancing.

Thoughts on the episode as a whole- Holy crap, what a good episode.  There was not a single bad perfomnce and all seven had something to love in each act.  I am shocked at how I ranked things this week.  Routines I thought I didn't like I loved and routines I remembering liking alot did not age well.
